Declutter

It is safe to say that most people have too many items. We collect things over the years and end up keeping everything, mostly by accident. Items that we never use get stored away and forgotten about year after year. If you want to make your move easier, start by decluttering and getting rid of items you no longer want or need. We suggest starting by going through the items in your garage, storage spaces, or basement. Again, it is safe to say that most people have boxes in one of these three areas that contain items we completely forgot about. Go through these boxes, get rid of items you don’t want, or haven’t used in years and will likely never use again.

As you start packing up the rest of your home, or before you even start packing, go through the rest of your home and get rid of anything you don’t want, need, or use anymore. You will have a lot less to pack and move!

While it can be difficult to get rid of items like this, it will make your move so much simpler. You can also donate them so that you don’t feel like you are throwing perfectly good things away. Or have a garage sale to make some extra cash!

Pack Non-Essentials

Packing an entire house is a challenge. Where do you begin? When should you begin? You don’t want to start packing too early and find yourself digging through boxes trying to find an item you packed away a month ago, but you also don’t want to save all the packing for the last day. Both of these methods will leave you more stressed than necessary.

Instead, start by packing non-essentials. If you are moving in summer, start packing up all of your winter items including clothing, decorations, extra blankets, and stuff like that. If you are moving in winter, pack away summer items like sports gears, patio furniture, and anything else you won’t need for the next few months.

Pack stuff from the linen closet, guest bedrooms, and decorations before you start getting to the more important stuff. Your bedroom and kitchen should be some of the last things you pack up because you will most likely need that stuff up until the last week.

Leave What You Need

As you come closer to your last day in your home, you should have most of your home packed away except for a few essential items. Some clothing, necessary bathroom items, bedding, coffee maker, some pots and pans, and eating utensils should be left until the last day. Everything should be packed up by the last week. You will likely not need 30 glasses in the next week, keep one for each family member and wash it every night. You will also likely not need your dress clothes or any formal wear, pack all your clothes up except for a few outfits, you can also wash the clothes you choose to keep when needed. If you reach the last day in your house and only have a few things to pack up, your job will be much easier.

These are a few of the packing tips that our team of real estate agents thinks are the most useful. If you need help finding a new home or selling your current one, we will be able to help you with that much more than we can help you with packing! Be sure to contact Iron Gate Real Estate in Columbia to get started. We will make the buying and selling process simpler, so all you have to worry about is packing.
